Oats are often used as a cover crop in rotation with vegetables because they grow quickly and are easy to terminate. If you plant oats in the early spring, they can be tilled in for a quick source of organic matter. Oats can be planted alone or mixed with a variety of other cover crops for added benefits.

In the spring these oats can be planted prior to growing late-summer/fall vegetables. Alternatively, they can be planted in August as a fall cover crop which will decompose during the winter months to prepare the soil for spring cultivation. Spring Oats can be grown on their own or combined with legumes.
